We had a little five-year old friend visiting today and everyone had a good time playing and running around. Besides playing with legos, dinosaurs and having pretend sword fights, we made cooked playdough and ice cream cone cupcakes. There are lots of cooked playdough recipes, but this is the one we used:
and 1 tsp. cream of tartar. Add 1 cup water, 1 tablespoon oil
and some food coloring and turn on stove to medium heat. Stir
with a whisk to make it smooth and get out the lumps, but when it starts to thicken, a large spoon works better. When it starts to look like a ball of dough, add about a tablespoon of some flavoring of your choice (vanilla, coconut, banana, cherry, etc.) Remove from heat and knead until smooth. Be careful, as it's quite warm right out of the saucepan. Store in an airtight container.
My daughter baked the ice cream cone cupcakes from this kids cookbook and when they were ready, everyone created their own "ice cream" with frosting and sprinkles. They turned out really cute, but no one really cared for the flavor or texture of the cupcake itself - too bland and rough textured. We'd probably just use a boxed cake mix next time instead.
